Cash In The Attic

Here is one way to make some money with what you already have…

My boyfriend got me hooked on a show that is on BBC America (and also on HGTV if you prefer an American version) and I love it! “Cash In the Attic” is a show hosted by a few different happy and peppy personalities, my favorite being Mr. Alistair Appleton. He begins the show by introducing a family who is looking to raise some money (”pounds” to the British) for things or events such as a wedding, remodeling a kitchen, or adding some brand new furniture to their living room. In comes an appraiser, who will sort through a family’s many items and antiques to find what is worth some money and what isn’t. I suppose that the name of the show refers to the many items and belongs that many of us people store in our attic and never really take the time to look back on, and many of the items are valuable.

I haven’t done it yet myself, but I would love to go through my piles of stuff to see if I can make some extra money. On the television show, after the family has sorted through a number of items and they feel that they have reached a good amount for whatever their goal may be, they go into auction. Now although the appraiser provides a price range for what he believes the family may earn on their items, that doesn’t mean that is what they will actually earn at auction. That factor in itself can go both ways: good and bad. Sometimes items just don’t sell, or don’t really make what you thought they would. It really depends on who has shown up to auction, and what they are looking for. On the other hand, an item that is appraised for $100 could easily be sold for $1000. Again, it depends who is at the auction, and what they are looking for. Rare and antique does not always equal big bucks.

So what do you say? Try and gather up all of those things you know you won’t use and more or even bother to look at. Be honest with yourself, and don’t force yourself to keep things just because you have had it for a long time or you paid a whole lot for it. Use your best judgement, and don’t settle for less either. If you choose not to go to an actual auction, try having a garage sale or use eBay. Happy money saving to you all!
